One of our Tennis For Fun athletes received a HUGE AWARD at the Florida Special Olympics Gala held September 28, 2024. Christopher McDarby, who has been a Tennis for Fun athlete since 2000, is the 2024 Florida Special Olympics Athlete of the Year! Congratulations Christopher! We are so proud of you!
Christopher has been involved in Special Olympics since he was nine years old and has been a Tennis For Fun athlete for 24 years. He has competed in Special Olympics track and field, bowling, golf, tennis, softball, soccer, bocce, and swimming. He has received many awards which include:
- Zenay Morales Courage Award 2010
- Florida Special Olympics Family of the Year award
Christopher is also involved in the Special Olympics Athlete Leadership Program and serves as a Global Messenger for the Special Olympics . He is active in Special Olympics fundraisers including the Publix Torch Fundraiser, Jersey Mike’s and the Special Olympics Torch Run .
Christopher’s volunteer endeavors include being an usher at Nativity Catholic Church for 15 years and volunteering at the Nativity food pantry. He also volunteers at Destiny Day Program teaching art to the students.
Christopher is a talented artist. He was recognized as the “ Emerging Artist of the Year“ by McDonald training center. He competes in art competitions and his art has been displayed at the Tampa International airport, the Florida State Fair, the Strawberry Festival, Amalee Arena and the Gasparilla Art Festival. He has accomplished all of this while also working at Publix for 12 years.
Christopher is a motivator and a role model to other ID individuals allowing them to recognize the possibilities that they can accomplish. Special Olympics has given Christopher the opportunity to excel and the confidence to accomplish so much. Christopher is an inspiration to everyone he meets. Congratulations Christopher!
